Happy Birthday HOOLIO!

Thanks to Wil i can now let ya'll know just how i came to be community mascot for the Bravenet journal bloggers.... read on!

The evolution of an Emu.

He was born in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park near the center of Australia near Ayers rock. Hatched at a very early age, he was named Drommie, short for Dromiceius Novaehollandiae, by his parents Bert and Ernesta.

Times were tough in the early years; food was scarce and angry mobs of Emus were wreaking havoc in the Outback, crashing through fences and devouring crops as they fled the country's worst drought in decades.

Eventually the fact that they were a protected species was all but forgotten as angry farmers began calling for a widespread cull of the flightless bird.

Bert and Ernesta were worried. This was no way to raise a child.

The decision was made..... it was time for Drommie to leave the Outback. They would rather see their child alone abroad than running with the "bad boys", stealing grain from sheep and knocking down motorcyclists in search of M & Ms.

But where? Where in the world could a young Emu survive on the kindness of others? A place where he could be accepted for WHAT he was.... An EMU..... not an ostrich or cassowary.

Then Bert remembered something he'd found LONG ago. It was a simple business card, left outside a local pub by a kind gentleman who had obviously had one too many Fosters.

A home for everyone?

Canada! Bert had heard of this place! A land of peace keepers, hockey players and curlers! Home to Canadian Bacon, Captain Canuck and guys in funny red uniforms with wide brimmed hats who never gave up til they "got their man." And any country that had a coin named after a bird couldnt be all bad could it?

When he informed his wife of his plan she uttered two words..

"CANADA EH?"

It went RIGHT over Berts head. (Ernesta married him for his rugged good looks.)

Then came the next problem - how do move a flighless bird 12,000+ kms (7,200 miles) from the middle of nowhere to the left Coast of the Great White North?

A ticket on Quantas would set mom and pop back $2661.49 Aussie Dollars ( $2,470 Canuck Bucks)

They were a family of simple means... and even if they were offer every feather off their backs to locals to sell to tourists they STILL couldnt raise that kind of money.

Then it was Ernesta turn for an Epiphany.....

She had recently seen a poster advertising the upcoming Australian International Airshow........ and one of the Featured Teams?

The Canadian SNOWBIRDS!!

The only problem was the event was taking place in Geelong, Victoria...... some 1200 miles away.

Bert promised Ernesta "You get our boy to Geelong and I'll get em on one of those planes!"

And sure enough, 4 weeks and 32 different truck rides later Bert and Ernesta were saying goodbye to their only child on a very hot airport Tarmac.

Their promised to return one day; Bert and Ernesta knew it probably wouldn't happen but smiled and said goodbye as Drommie pulled the cover closed on the luggage carrier hanging off the hardpoint of the CT-144 Tutor jet.

Two days later there was a muffled knock at a door in Parksville, Canada.

The rest, as they say.... is history!
